About Jay Reid

I'm a licensed psychotherapist in San Francisco, California, and since 2014 I've specialized in working with adults who grew up under narcissistic abuse, especially those who were cast in the family scapegoat role.

I focus on this work for two reasons.

First, survivors have been trained to believe they are much worse than they are. That is profoundly unfair. A big part of therapy with me involves discovering the “good news” that you are far better than you were ever allowed to believe.

Second, I know this terrain from the inside. I was the scapegoat in my own family of origin, and I find real purpose in walking alongside other survivors as they reclaim the quality of life they deserve.

Outside of one-on-one therapy, I work to promote recovery from narcissistic abuse more broadly. I post weekly videos on my YouTube channel to help survivors understand what happened to them and how to heal.

I am also bringing the concept of narcissistic abuse into the academic world. I've published a journal article on how a narcissistic parent can force a child to believe they deserve the parent's abuse, and I continue to write and speak on this topic.
